Description / Abstract: The purpose of a test on a reciprocating steam engines is to verify the guarantees given by the manufacturer of the engine or to determine the performance of a given engine with regard to one or more of the following objects:

(a) The thermal-economy characteristics of the engine (the heat rate and/or the steam rate).

(b) Capacity (indicated, brake and/or kilowatt output).

Tests made to determine other data or to verify particular guarantees all of which are outside the scope of this code shall be made only after written agreement of both parties to the test regarding methods and details of tests and computations.

This code provides for the carrying out of acceptance or performance tests and for the computation and tabulation of the results on reciprocating steam engines with no extraction and no reheating. All steam enters at one pressure and leaves at another single pressure.

This code applies also to tests for determining the performance of the engine alone including jackets, if any, or in the case of a direct-connected generator, of the engine generator unit when guaranteed on the kilowatt-hour basis, apart from the independently driven auxiliaries which are necessary for the engine's operation.
