Purpose
Engineering drawings and related documents provide effective man-to-man communication among interrelated engineering and manufacturing disciplines. Application of computer aids to those disciplines has engendered an additional requirement for direct communication of digital data (e.g., representing geometry) among the interrelated computer programs. Anticipating eventual extension of this requirement to computer programs of interfacing organizations (e.g., contractor-subcontractor), development of a proposed standard for digital representation of physical object shapes was undertaken.
